Q: What age does a child have to be to start a programme of Neuro Developmental Therapy?
A: This very much depends on the child and their ability to do the exercises. The ideal age to start the programme is 7 years of age, however, Neuro Developmental Therapists see clients of all ages from children to adults. Younger children may start with Johansen sound therapy and later progress to Neuro Developmental Therapy.
Q: How long does a programme of Neuro Developmental Therapy take?
A: During therapy, your child will have a set of specific movements which are performed every day for approximately 5-10 minutes. Each programme is specifically designed for the needs of each child and will evolve as the programme progresses. Both you and your child are guided by your therapist through the full programme and progress will be reviewed with you both at regular intervals. A complete programme generally lasts for between 12-18 months.
Q: Do I need a referral?
A: No. A Healthcare professional, such as Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Educational Psychologist or Teacher may have identified that your child has developmental immaturity issues and recommend contacting a Neuro Developmental Therapist for further investigation. However referrals from a Healthcare practitioner is not essential.

Q: Is Neuro Developmental therapy suitable for adults?
A: Neuro developmental therapy can be of benefit for any individual that has retained their primitive reflexes and the benefits and changes are the same as they are for a child. However, if an adult wants to undertake a programme we suggest that they have a very supportive environment as the changes that occur may release past thought patterns and emotional memories. Discussion with a Neuro Developmental therapist is recommended to determine suitability.
Q: What happens at the initial consultation?
A: The initial consultation takes 1 hour to complete. At the Initial Consultation your therapist will discuss your child’s presenting problems, developmental history, and suitability for the Neuro Developmental Therapy programme.
Q: What happens at the diagnostic assessment?
A: The diagnostic assessment takes 2 1⁄2 hours to complete and involves assessment of your child’s gross and fine motor coordination, balance, primitive and postural reflexes, eye movements and visual perception and audiometric assessment if appropriate. The assessment is completely non-invasive. The person being assessed should wear comfortable clothing, such as t-shirt and shorts/tracksuit bottoms. Based on the outcome of the diagnostic assessment your child will be given an individualised programme of exercise to carry out at home under parental supervision.
Q: What happens at each review?
A: Following the Diagnostic Assessment your child will be reviewed every 6 to 8 weeks to assess progress and adjust the exercise programme. At each review your child’s gross and fine motor skills, balance, primitive and postural reflexes, eye movements and visual perception will be reassessed. An Audiometric assessment may be carried out also if a recommendation for sound therapy is indicated. The review assessment is non-invasive, the client once again wearing t-shirt and shorts/tracksuit bottoms and working in bare feet. At the end of the review assessment your therapist will choose a movement exercise best suited to your child reflex profile. The therapist will demonstrate the exercise and provide you with a detailed instruction leaflet showing how to do the exercise at home.
Q: How long do the exercises take to do and how often do you have to do them?
A: The exercises take approximately 5 to 10 minutes a day to complete. They must be done under Parental supervision to ensure that they are being carried out with precision and care. It is very important to carry out exercises daily to help strengthen neural pathways and ensure success of the programme.
